GEORGIA, June 15 ― A supermarket cashier in the U.S. state of Georgia was shot and killed by a customer yesterday in a dispute over the wearing of a face mask before the gunman was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the store's security guard, the local sheriff said. The agency said preliminary information indicates that Tucker got into an argument with the cashier and left the store without making his purchase, but he immediately returned inside.
The cashier was officially pronounced dead at Grady hospital.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and DeKalb County Police are investigating the incident. Authorities added that a second cashier had been grazed by a bullet during the shooting. "The wearing of the mask and not wearing of the mask, people have their own opinion about it and it is very sensitive at this time".
A reserve deputy, who was employed part-time for security with the store, exchanged fire with the suspect, and both were wounded, the sheriff said. Maddox said she did not know what the grocery store's mask policy was at the time of the shooting.
"That is what he is trained to do", Maddox said.
Tucker hit the casher, killing her, before he was shot and injured by an off-duty officer, a 30-year veteran of the DeKalb County Police Department, who was working as a security guard.
