The Human Rights Campaign will always stand up to anti-equality forces on behalf of transgender kids, and that is exactly what we plan to do by legally challenging this ban on the participation of transgender girls and women in sports.
Ron DeSantis signed a law on Tuesday limiting girls' sports at public schools to biological girls. "In Florida, we are ensuring that there are legal consequences to pay for being on the wrong side of history".
DeSantis also announced that he would be signing a separate bill the same day that would allow students to get compensation for the use of their name and likeness, effective July 1, 2021, despite the bill signed on video pushing the date off to 2022.
In a statement, Eskamani said the bill targets "one of the most vulnerable groups of people in our state" and "excludes transgender people from public life, including participation in sports".
The legislation passed over the objection of Democrats and civil rights advocates who call the banning of transgender girls and women from sports unnecessary and discriminatory and accuse Republicans of portraying them as a provocation to energize the right wing of their party.
High-profile athletic events, such as football bowl games and basketball tournaments, generate millions of dollars for local communities. Transgender kids are kids; transgender girls are girls. It's not clear whether all females must show their birth certificates, or only those whose gender is questioned.
The final wording of the "Fairness in Women's Sports Act" stripped away some of its most contentious elements, including a requirement that transgender athletes in high schools and colleges undergo testosterone or genetic testing and submit to having their genitalia examined.
The Florida state Legislature passed a measure in April that prevents transgender athletes from competing in women's sports, saying that it would be unfair and argued that biological males possess significant physical advantages over females.
High school athletes in CT filed a lawsuit to block biological males from female sports.
The Human Rights Campaign plans to sue Florida over the law. All Floridians will have to face the consequences of this anti-transgender legislation - including economic harm, expensive taxpayer-funded legal battles, and a tarnished reputation.
"This is yet another hate-driven attack from the governor and Republican legislators, and it's insulting that they've staged this morning's photo-op on the first day of Pride Month", said state Sen. Shevrin Jones. "At the end of the day, transgender kids are just kids". "This is about sports and having competitive advantage and having the ability to compete", she remarked on Tuesday, adding that the bill will benefit women.
"Any dreams of being first or best were shattered", she said. When a trans young person is told they cannot play the sport they love exclusively because of who they are, it can be incredibly harmful to their mental health and sense of self, and contribute to increased risk for suicide.
