A gunfight between two men and police officers at a shopping district in a Denver suburb left an officer and one of the suspects dead, authorities said Monday.
Last month, about 80 miles south of the city, six people died after a shooting at a Colorado Springs, Colorado, birthday party, police said.
Authorities say an armed man allegedly shot an officer and another person in a suburban Denver shopping district before being fatally shot by police.
A second suspect was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries.
Around 2 p.m. local time, there was a shooting near the Old Towne area of Arvada. However, he wouldn't say whether the possible suspects were injured or killed.
Fox News has reached out to the Arvada Police Department but has not heard back.
Shortly before the shooting, police officers received a call about something suspicious in the area.
The shooting occurred in the city's downtown district with shops, restaurants, breweries and other businesses.
"This is by far the saddest day for our police department", Williams said. I knew something serious had happened. An eyewitness told FOX31 that she heard three gunshots and multiple police vehicles, including ambulances and one that "may have been the coroner". He said he took off in his vehicle.
"I just got out of there", the Arvada resident said. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis issued a statement expressing his condolences to the officer's family and friends, while the Colorado State Patrol tweeted: "All our love to the @ArvadaPolice and the family, blood and blue, of their fallen officer".
By evening in Arvada, a large police presence had lined up for a procession, while some residents were lining the street where the procession would take place with flags.
