Fauci answered that the European countries fully locked down to curb the spread of the virus.
Fauci, who last testified before Congress on June 30, is being joined during a hybrid in-person/remote hearing by two other leading officials from the White House Coronavirus Task Force: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's director, Dr. Robert Redfield, and the assistant secretary for health at the Department of Health and Human Services, Adm. Brett Giroir.
On Friday, Fauci refused to say whether large protests should also be suspended. "Do you see the inconsistency though, Dr. Fauci?"
"If you look at what happened in Europe, when they shut down or locked down or went to shelter in place - however you want to describe it - they really did it to the tune of about 95% plus of the country did that", Fauci said.
People have often been skeptical about a vaccine actually arriving, especially since it would be the fastest vaccine to be made and distributed in history. With COVID-19, the immune response is much stronger.
"I'm not favouring anybody over anybody", Fauci replied.
"I think the difference between HIV and coronavirus is so different that I don't think you can compare them, because the body does not make a very good immune response against HIV so it makes vaccine development very hard", Dr. Fauci said. HIV vaccine development has been so hard because the body doesn't make a strong immune response to that virus, he explained. Instead, it's likely be distributed in phases, but that every American will eventually be able to get it within 2021.
Fauci did not bite, telling the OH congressman: "I don't understand what you're asking (of) me as a public health official to opine on who should get arrested". It probably will be phased in.
He even said that, in response to Fauci's comments about the measures Americans needs to take, "Fauci is 79, but maybe if he had like 22-year-old kids who were trying to make their way in this world in an economy that is headed down the tubes, thanks largely to his recommendations, he would feel differently".
During the hearing, Fauci was been asked about why the Europe did better job than the U.S.in the aspect of containing COVID-19.
People in states that didn't follow the guidelines ignored guidance on wearing masks, avoiding crowds, and maintaining at least six feet from non-household members, Fauci added, saying: "Hopefully as we're going forward we can turn this around".
Further, according to the report, Dr Fauci believes that the US National Institutes of Health will be working with Indian counterparts in a bid to show that Indian research and development capacity is integrated along with the global effects in producing vaccines for the novel Coronavirus.
Jordan also cited the Supreme Court's decision to reject a Nevada church's request to be subjected to the same COVID-19 restrictions that the state's casinos, restaurants, amusement parks, and other businesses must abide by.
