Four gunmen armed with grenades attacked the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Monday, killing two guards and a policeman before security forces killed the attackers. They launched the attack by using grenades and then opened fire at the entrance of the Pakistan Stock Exchange.
Police and Rangers officials arrived at the scene soon after the attack and killed all four attackers, Sindh Rangers said.
Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon claimed that the attackers, who came in a silver Corolla auto were killed at the main gate of PSX.
Five persons including a police officer and security guards were martyred and many others including a police officer were injured. The surrounding areas have been sealed by police and Rangers personnel.
Director-General Rangers Sindh Major-General Omer Ahmed Bokhari, addressing a press conference in Karachi, said the attackers meant to not only enter the building but also carry out violence and hold people hostage.
A tweet from the official Twitter page of the Pakistan Stock Exchange said, "The situation is still unfolding and management, with the help of security forces, is managing the security and controlling the situation", it said.
"They made their way from our parking area and opened fire on everyone". Weapons and hand grenades were recovered from the site.
According to some media reports, the attackers were reportedly wearing clothes usually worn by police officials while they are off-duty.
In a statement, he said Pakistan is determined to root out terrorism from its soil and terrorists will never succeed in their nefarious designs.
"Anti-state elements want to take advantage of the virus situation", he said.
Sindh Governor Imran Ismail condemned the incident, saying: "We shall protect Sindh at all costs".
Khan said Pakistan's intelligence agencies had successfully preempted at least four major attacks in the country, two of which targeted Islamabad - but he said it was not possible to stop all such attacks.
