It was not known what made the 13 passengers and 29 crew members sick on Zaandam, a Holland America Line ship. There are 1,243 guests and 586 crew onboard, according to a press release.
The ship was little over a week into its cruise around the continent when borders began to increasingly close in response to the global coronavirus pandemic.
"Our intention is to proceed to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for arrival on March 30, however we are still working on securing a reservation to transit the Panama Canal".
Holland America said it is following protocols developed with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
On March 16, those on board learned all entries into Chile were closed, leaving nowhere for the passengers, including hundreds of Canadians, to disembark in order to make their way home, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged travellers to do as soon as possible.
The cruise line said alternative options are also being developed.Читайте также: 860 morts et près de 20 000 cas confirmés en France — Coronavirus
"Those that are needed to maintain the ship's operation are being asked to self-isolate when not performing essential functions, practice social distancing, self-monitor and report any illness to the medical center", the company's statement said.
Even though cruise lines have suspended operations around the globe it has still remained hard to get ships back to ports and safely disembark passengers.
When Coral Princess ended its voyage in Buenos Aires, Argentina on March 19 it was required to abruptly depart the port.
Coral Princess is having problems trying to disembark passengers due to ongoing port closures and restrictions in South America.
The ship anchored off Valparaiso, Chile, on Friday and Saturday to bring on more fuel and supplies, including medications for passengers who needed refills.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
