Abuja - The Coachella Music and Arts Festival, an annual worldwide music fiesta, commonly called Coachella, billed for April the US, has been postponed until October amid fears of spread of coronavirus.
The annual Californian festival, originally planned for the second and third weekends in April, has now been moved to the weekends of October 9 and October 16, 2020.
Yesterday speculation was rife that the event would be postponed, now it's been confirmed.
Coachella, which was supposed to be held in two weekend installments, April 10 to 12 and April 17 to 19, will now take place six months later on October 9, 10 and 11 and October 16, 17 and 18, 2020. In the same announcement, Goldenvoice said it was moving Coachella's sister event, the Stagecoach country music festival, from the weekend of April. 24 to the weekend of October 23.
Tickets bought for the April dates will be valid in October, and those unable to attend will be able to obtain a refund, organizers said. "Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you in the desert this fall".
The announcement comes on the heels of Miami's decision to cancel the Ultra electronic dance music festival and Austin's move to scrap the 10-day South by Southwest tech and culture gathering.
"We work closely with all of the relevant agencies, including Public Health England and the NHS, and always review our plans as any circumstances change".
Italy and Iran are also contending with major outbreaks of Coronavirus and have cancelled sporting events. Sources in the touring industry say they believe other upcoming festivals due to take place later this year are also at risk of postponement or cancelation, depending on the health situation in the next few weeks.
