Oakland and Wayne counties each have 23 total cases.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Khaldun provided an update on Michigan's coronavirus response hours after Beaumont Health confirmed a man in his 50s with underlying health issues died of COVID-19.
"Our medical team went to extraordinary efforts to care for this patient and we are deeply saddened by his passing and empathize with his family", said Susan Grant, Chief Nursing Officer of Beaumont Health, in a statement.
"This limited screening is only for patients who have symptoms consistent with COVID-19", says Dr. Nicholas Gilpin, medical director of infection prevention and epidemiology for the health system. At press time, it was unknown if the first confirmed death was one of the four patients noted previously.
She said those additional cases, which have not officially been confirmed, are in 15 counties and involve patients ranging from young children to over 80 years old. There are 80 cases in the state now.
Beaumont posts that it "has started processing a limited number of COVID-19 tests in its own laboratory".
In addition, Beaumont plans to launch web-based screening for patients later this week. "We don't have enough resources to process the tests, just in terms of the ability to run them quick enough", Whitmer said.
The Henry Ford lab began testing about 30 patients Monday, and within a month expects to test up to 1,000 specimens daily, Henry Ford officials told reporter.
"We don't have enough tests".
Among these and other efforts, such as visitor restrictions, cancellations of non-essential surgeries, and collaborating with other health care systems, Beaumont has put several prevention strategies in action to mitigate the potential spread of the virus.
