World Health Organization emergencies chief said the few cases of human-to-human spread of the virus outside China - in Japan, Germany, Canada and Vietnam - were of "great concern" and were part of the reason the United Nations health agency's director-general was reconvening a committee of experts on Thursday to assess whether the outbreak should be declared a global emergency.
The government on Thursday reported 38 new deaths in the preceding 24 hours, the highest one-day total since the virus was detected late a year ago.
Nearly all the deaths so far have been in the central province of Hubei, home to about 60 million people and now under virtual lockdown.

Also Wednesday, Israel's Health Ministry said it was considering calling on Israelis who recently visited China to quarantine themselves.
Two returnees from Japan tested positive for the virus in Tokyo on January 29 although they showed no symptoms, explaining why some countries are planning extreme quarantine measures for the entire incubation period of up to 14 days.
Over 7,700 people in China have been diagnosed with coronavirus since the outbreak began in December, in the city of Wuhan.
Doctors come out of an isolation ward after attending to people who returned from China and under observation at the Government Fever Hospital in Hyderabad. The country of Kazakhstan has halted all mass transportation - flights, train and buses - to neighboring China.
Cases of infection have also been confirmed in 14 other countries - including Thailand, Australia, Singapore and the United States - according to a World Health Organization report as of Wednesday.
Many governments have urged their citizens not to visit China, while some have banned entry for travellers from Wuhan.
Australia is yet to gain permission from the Chinese government to evacuate hundreds of its citizens, and New Zealand has launched a separate rescue mission from its neighbour, though a timeline is still unclear.
"We need to learn from each other on how to evacuate our citizens as soon as possible", Retno said, adding that evacuations were not simple and that the government needed to look into the distribution of Indonesians in Hubei and how to transport them amid lockdown.
It cited Ministry of Commerce data showing current reserves in Wuhan can ensure a secure supply of rice and cooking oil for more than 15 days, pork and eggs for more than 10 days and vegetables for about five days.
People who have been in Hubei Province are also being told by their employers to work from home until it is considered safe for them to return.
The federal health department has issued new advice amid evidence the virus has been spread by people before they develop any symptoms.
"The whole world needs to take action", Michael Ryan, head of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, told reporters in Geneva. He said China was taking "extraordinary measures in the face of an extraordinary challenge" posed by the outbreak.
To date, about 99% of the cases are in China. Scientists say there are still many questions to be answered about the new virus, including just how transmissible and severe it is. Most of the deaths have been in Hubei.
Like the similar Sars and influenza viruses, the new coronavirus is thought to be particularly a risk for elderly and people with pre-existing illnesses. The new virus is from the coronavirus family, which includes those that can cause the common cold as well as more serious illnesses such as SARS and MERS.
Concern is also growing that thousands of Chinese factory workers on Lunar New Year holidays may struggle to get back to work next week, due to extensive travel restrictions imposed to stop the spread of the virus. The delayed response was blamed for allowing the disease to spread worldwide, killing around 800 people.
This time, in addition to working with WHO, China's health minister Ma Xiaowei has been in touch with foreign colleagues, including U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar.
