But Tuesday night officials in Ontario, which is east of Los Angeles, said in a statement that the CDC informed it that the plane would instead be diverted to March Air Reserve Base, which is to the southeast in Riverside County.
In Anchorage, Alaska, passengers were set to go through customs and Centers for Disease Control screening. Officials have not said how long that housing period will last.
"Alaska is proud to do its part in helping our fellow Americans come home safely", Gov. Mike Dunleavy said, applauding the rigorous screenings the passengers underwent. "At the end of the day, 201 passengers loaded and 201 passengers left Alaska", she said. It's first stop is Anchorage, where travelers will be re-screened for the virus. It landed shortly after 8 a.m. local time, according to the flight tracking site Flightradar24.
Passenger Scott Allis told CNN they received a hot meal in Anchorage, while Darby Siebels said passengers had a chance to charge their phones before getting back on the plane after 1 a.m. (5 a.m. ET).
"For many of us directly involved, this has been a moving and uplifting experience", said Alaska's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anne Zink in a statement.
Wuhan is the epicentre of a new virus that has sickened thousands and killed more than 100 and the official said the plane left the city before dawn on Wednesday, China time.
The airport terminal is normally only used in the summer for global flights before carrying on to California.
The plane was initially headed to Ontario International Airport in California.
The State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services had originally said that about 240 US citizens would be on the flight from Wuhan, although the plane ended up carrying 201 passengers.
Hermione Dickey, 8, and her mother, Priscilla, are among the passengers on a USA evacuation flight out of Wuhan, China. The plane will make a refueling stop in Anchorage before flying on to Ontario, California, the U.S. Embassy in China has said.
Precautions were taken to separate the crew on the plane's upper level from the passengers on the plane's lower level, she said, and the crew did not disembark in China.

At the time, Hagman said authorities were setting up beds, phone chargers and televisions in an isolated, dormant hangar at Ontario International Airport.
It's unclear whether the same procedure will be followed at the military base, which is in a different county.
The U.S. State Department didn't immediately respond to Fox News' request to comment on why the decision was made. "We have suspended all flights to and from mainland China with immediate effect following advice from the Foreign Office against all but essential travel", it said in an emailed statement.
The State Department said on Tuesday that the charter plane from Wuhan, the center of the outbreak, left with staff from the USA consulate as well as private American citizens.
The department said it was unable to accommodate everyone due to space limitations, but it is working to identify alternative routes for US citizens to depart Wuhan by land. All six were in Wuhan before traveling to the United States. In addition to the United States, countries including Japan and South Korea have also planned evacuations. The European Commission said it was sending two aircraft to evacuate European Union citizens from Wuhan. The flight is carrying Americans who are being evacuated from Wuhan, China, over the deadly coronavirus.
