Staff were told that a deadline to identify a buyer for the business passed at midday and that "realistically we do not expect to receive an offer".
Retail giant Toys "R" Us intends to shut down all 100 of its United Kingdom stores over the coming weeks, resulting in the loss of around 3000 jobs.
"Twenty five Toys R Us stores have either closed in recent days or are due to close by tomorrow".
Last month, Moorfields, the administrator managing the business, said that it was making "every effort" to secure a buyer for all or part of Toys "R" Us, to help save the company.
Seventy-five stores will be closed over the next six weeks, on top of the 25 outlets that have already closed or are about to shut under an earlier plan.
"It is therefore with great regret that we have made the hard decision to. proceed with a controlled store closure programme", Thomas said.
In the UK Toys R Us joins a long list of high street retailers including Maplin and Claire's that have run into difficulties this year.
Compounding the retail sector's pain are the painful restructurings of high street eateries Byron, Prezzo and Jamie Oliver's casual dining chain, as well as rising business rates bills.
Performance was also said to have been dented by soaring inflation, falling consumer spending and competition from online rivals.
The closure sales will see the remaining Toys R Us stores reducing the cost of their stock prior to closing up shop.
Today (March 14) staff were informed that no buyer had been found and so they would need to start the hunt for new jobs. We'll keep you posted on any new details. All the best to those who find themselves out of work.
