A man sought for questioning in NY in the killing of a university nursing student has been detained in Nicaragua, authorities in the Central American nation said Tuesday. She was a nursing student at Binghamton University.
According to CBS affiliate WBNG, Birmingham Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said police had responded to a minor incident in September in which Anderson claimed Tercero had damaged her property, but she did not wish to file charges.
Anderson was last seen alive around 4 a.m. on Thursday and was with her roommates before she went missing, police said. Despite confirming the arrest to the news organization, the Nicaragua National Police did not have any further information available.
Detectives are continuing the investigation with the assistance of New York State University Police at Binghamton, the Broome County District Attorney's Office, the FBI, the Port Authority Police Department and Nassau County police. "There is no threat to public safety at this time", the post said. The circumstances of what led to Anderson's death have not been revealed, and it is unclear if Anderson knew Tercero.
Meanwhile arrangements had been made for Anderson's funeral, for which money is being raised through a GoFundMe page. "Haley's laughter was infectious and her child-like spirit touched all the people around her", it reads.
