"Sending my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of [RCMP] officers Shelby Patton - know that I'm keeping you in my thoughts".
"Constable Patton initiated a traffic stop with the truck in the town of Wolseley". Patton died on the scene.
Patton had worked at the Indian Head Detachment since 2015, according to the Saskatchewan RCMP, the entirety of his six years and four months with the police force.
Blackmore says a man and a woman have been arrested, and charges are pending.
"This morning, I, along with the Indian Head detachment commander and the Saskatchewan RCMP chaplain, had to tell Const. Patton's wife the hard news that he is not coming home", Blackmore said. During the stop, the suspect vehicle struck and killed the police officer.
"Constable Patton's family is also part of the RCMP family".
"It is with tremendous sorrow that Saskatchewan mourns the loss of RCMP Constable Shelby Patton, who was killed in the line of duty this morning", Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe wrote on Twitter. "They have lost a husband, son and brother".
The Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
To show respect for the fallen officer, flags at RCMP detachments across the country will be flying at half-mast.
Mounties say an increased police presence is expected in the areas around Wolseley and Francis as the investigation continues.
Tim Taylor says he heard sirens at 8 a.m. and there have been many officers in the community.
Ken Drever, another councillor in Wolseley, said the community is shaken by what happened. "Something like this is something you don't expect to happen here". Although we wear a police uniform, we are regular people, going to our job each day, just as everyone else does.
