Shortly after 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT) the Capitol Police alert system sent an email to lawmakers and their staff ordering them to stay away from exterior windows and doors. At least one officer opened fire when the man "did not respond to verbal commands".

The order mirrors a proclamation from President Joe Biden. They have not identified the other officer who was injured. Capitol Police said in an update after 6 p.m. that the second officer was in "stable" condition.

"We have designated the incident under our Dangerous Individuals and Organization policy, which means we have removed the suspect's accounts from Facebook and Instagram, and are removing any content that praises, supports, or represents the attack or the suspect", Facebook said in a statement to NBC.
The Washington Metropolitan Police Department, along with assistance from the FBI's Washington Field Office, will take over the investigation into Friday's attack.
