In a peculiar statement that repeated Gaetz's full name four times, the congressman's office denied all the allegations reported so far. "We thank him for his time in our office, and we wish him the best moving forward".
Gaetz is facing accusations of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and traveling with her across state lines.
The news of the departure comes in wake of a New York Times report that said the DOJ investigation into Gaetz and a former Florida local tax collector, Joel Greenberg, centers on "their involvement with multiple women who were recruited online for sex and received cash payments".
The evolving Matt Gaetz scandal became more complicated as his communication director Luke Ball "has quit out of "principle" with the congressman facing a flood of allegations including claims he trafficked a 17-year-old girl", reports the Daily Mail.
Rep. Matt Gaetz's communications director has left the office of the Florida Republican amid a federal criminal probe into whether the congressman paid women for sex. Gaetz has denied those allegations and instead claimed that he and his family were victims of an elaborate extortion plot.
The NYT examined "receipts from Cash App, a mobile payments app, and Apple Pay that show payments from Mr. Gaetz and Mr. Greenberg to one of the women, and a payment from Mr. Greenberg to a second woman".
"Matt Gaetz has never paid for sex", Gaetz's office said in a statement to newspaper. Investigators believe Joel Greenberg, the former tax collector in Seminole County, Fla., who was indicted previous year on a federal sex trafficking charge and other crimes, initially met the women through websites that connect people who go on dates in exchange for gifts, fine dining, travel, and allowances, according to three people with knowledge of the encounters. The report cited text messages and receipts as well as people "close to the investigation".
Matt Gaetz listens during a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on antitrust on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, in Washington. Matt Gaetz has never ever been on any such websites whatsoever.
A report from CNN says Gaetz bragged about women he had relations with to House colleagues and showed them nude pictures and videos of the women. "Matt Gaetz cherishes the relationships in his past and looks forward to marrying the love of his life".
