Alberta Health has refused to confirm the specifics of the outbreak but Postmedia obtained a letter sent by Alberta Health Services on Saturday confirming the outbreak occurred at PTW Energy Services.
Hinshaw taking to Twitter on Monday instead of the originally planned live update saying this new outbreak began with a traveller who returned from out of the province, leading to 26 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Alberta's top doctor says an outbreak of the COVID-19 variant first found in Brazil appears to be linked to a large employer with multiple sites across Western Canada.
Alberta's chief medical officer of health and premier will take questions from reporters for the first time after the Easter weekend as the province's COVID-19 situation continues to worsen.
Alberta public health officials are investigating two workplace outbreaks of the P.1 variant of the coronavirus, Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Monday.
Hinshaw says so far three of those infections are confirmed to be the more unsafe Brazilian variant, but she adds that's likely to increase as more results come in.
"AHS has been working with the operator and cases to ensure anyone at risk of exposure is offered testing and quarantines to limit the spread", Hinshaw wrote.
Five cases are now linked to that outbreak, including one confirmed case of the P.1 variant. "Anyone at risk is being directly contacted and supported".
There are now 10,582 active cases in the province with 40% of those being variants of concern.
Hinshaw said four more deaths have been reported to Alberta Health since April 1.
As of Sunday, 312 patients were being treated in Alberta hospitals for COVID-19, including 76 in ICU beds. Meanwhile, its test positivity has exceeded eight per cent each of the last four days, including 9.89 per cent reported yesterday, the fourth-highest value to date.
Nearly 10 per cent of tests done over the past day came back positive for COVID-19.
Zahara said it's frustrating that AHS has not been transparent with many communities especially as cases of the variants are rising.
She thanked the public for their patience.
