UK PM Johnson: No decisions on exact date of opening of schools

On Saturday, Mr Johnson said he was "optimistic" about forthcoming plans for a "cautious" easing of England's lockdown - expected to begin with the reopening of schools from 8 March.

On Sunday the government announced it had managed to offer first vaccine doses to all those in the top four groups most vulnerable to coronavirus - a day ahead of time, with the target set for February 15.

"These vaccines are safe and will help defend people against disease and death". "For me, making sure that as we lift measures, we do so carefully and cautiously to make sure that we don't have to put them on again, that is at the core of the judgment we have to make".

"If because of the rate of infection, we have to push something off a little bit to the right - delay it for a little bit - we won't hesitate to do that".

"If we possibly can, we will be setting out target dates for earliest reopening".

Johnson, who will set out his plan to lift lockdown on February 22, said the rates of infection were still very high and that too many people were still dying.

"No vaccination programme is 100% effective".

"If you have loads of infected people then there are greater risks of new variants".

Asked on BBC Breakfast whether the Government wanted the current lockdown to be the last, the Health Secretary said: "Absolutely, we very much hope so".

"We are not going to have vaccine passports to go to the pub in this country".
