Prince Philip, 99, in hospital 'as a precaution'

Britain's Prince Philip does not have COVID-19 and his admission to hospital on Tuesday evening was precautionary and not an emergency admission, a royal source said.

The 99-year-old was taken to the private King Edward VII Hospital on Tuesday evening, the palace said, adding that it was "a precautionary measure".

He was taken to hospital on the advice of his doctor and a palace statement said it was a "precautionary measure", with the duke said to be in good spirits.

Prince Philip retired from public duties in 2017 at the age of 96 following a two-night hospitalisation for an infection.

A palace source told the BBC that he travelled by auto to the hospital, where he was admitted on his doctor's advice.

The prince had been feeling unwell for a short period and he walked into hospital unaided, a royal source said.

The Queen has remained at Windsor Castle where she and her husband have been spending lockdown.

The duke was then driven to Sandringham and spent Christmas with the Queen.

In 2019, the Duke of Edinburgh was involved in a vehicle crash when he attempted to pull out of a driveway near the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Philip needed help to get out of the Land Rover but wasn't injured.

The latest hospitalisation renewed concerns about Philip's health ahead of his 100th birthday in June this year.

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth celebrated their 73rd anniversary last November.
