Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip, Harry's father Prince Charles and the whole family were "delighted" and wished the couple well, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said. The Duchess wrote an essay about her experience losing her child.
This news comes in the light of the Duchess' miscarriage last July, "Losing a child means carrying an nearly unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few", she wrote in a searingly honest and heartbreaking New York Times essay on November 25.
The couple's announcement also came with a handsome black-and-white photo of Harry and Meghan. In the image, Harry is sitting in grass while Meghan lays her head in his lap, her hand resting on her bump. The two are all smiles in the photo as they look at each other.
Harry and Meghan are preparing to welcome a brother or sister for their young son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor. "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child", a spokesperson for the couple said in a statement on Sunday.
A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess told the press: "We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother".
In the picture, the Duchess is wearing a long dress by Carolina Herrera, which she also wore during her pregnancy with Archie.
The couple's news echoes Princess Diana's announcement of her own second child - Prince Harry - which was printed in newspapers on Valentine's Day in 1984. She had a miscarriage in July. Based on the pregnancy photo they shared, it seems as though Meghan could be in her first or second trimester.
Archie was born in May 2019.
