Minutes after the conference ended, the province's chief electoral officer Bruce Chaulk issued a news release saying all in-person voting was cancelled and the election would proceed with mail-in ballots only.

Doctor Janice Fitzgerald, the chief medical officer for Newfoundland and Labrador, has now placed the entire province back to its highest alert level.

"This variant is more infectious than the original strain of SARS COV2".

"The positive cases we are seeing now are primarily the result of exposures in the last two to three weeks", Fitzgerald said.

Under Alert Level 5, all businesses and other facilities, with the exception of essential services have closed.

Throughout the day, confusion about the election's status reigned, and the party leaders were largely absent from view, apart from an appearance by Liberal Party Leader and Premier Andrew Furey at a public health briefing on the outbreak. My one and only concern right now is the safety of the people of our province.

Newfoundland and Labrador is dealing with a massive spike in COVID-19 cases. "We will do everything we can to contain this spread, and to protect you and your family".

There have been 194 cases announced since Monday, accounting for almost all of the province's current active cases.
