Bob Dole diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer

Former U.S. Republican Senator Bob Dole, who unsuccessfully ran for president in 1996, said on Thursday that he has been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and will undergo treatment beginning next week.

The announcement from Dole - who faced off against former President Bill Clinton as the Republican candidate in 1996 - comes after the passing of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who died on Wednesday after a yearlong battle with lung cancer. "My first treatment will begin Monday", Dole, 97, wrote on Twitter. He was also then-GOP nominee Gerald Ford's running mate in the 1976 election, which they lost.

Dole was elected to the US House of Representatives from Kansas in 1960 and won election to the US Senate in 1968.

Dole served as a USA senator from Kansas from 1969 to 1996 and also served as both the Senate majority and minority leader during his long career.

He was soundly defeated, however, after an uninspiring campaign, with Clinton capturing 379 electoral votes to Dole's 159.

Dole suffered serious wounds in Italy during World War II that resulted in a long hospitalization. Both awards are the highest civilian awards that exist in the U.S.
