Un champion olympique parmi les émeutiers du Capitole

Des paramilitaires, des Proud Boys, des QAnon, des néo-nazis mais aussi... un ancien médaillé olympique.

Keller (38 ans), qui mesure 1,98m et portait une veste de l'équipe nationale américaine mais pas de masque de protection, a rapidement été identifié par plusieurs ex-coéquipiers et entraîneurs.

Le New York Times et SwimSwam, un site d'information sur la natation, affirment que Keller a fait partie de ceux qui ont pénétré dans le bâtiment qui sert de siège au Congrès, le pouvoir législatif des États-Unis, interrompant la session qui devait confirmer la victoire de Joe Biden à la présidentielle.

Tout part d'une vidéo publiée par le site conservateur Townhall. Dans une autre vidéo, on le voit une bouteille d'eau à la main, toujours dans la rotonde.

Champion olympique à Athènes en 2004 et Pékin en 2008 aux côtés de Michael Phelps, et médaillé d'argent à Sydney en 2000 au relais 4x200 m, Ketle Keller compte aussi deux médailles de bronze individuelles en 2000 et 2004 au 400 m nage libre.


Selon SwinSwam, l'athlète a eu du mal à faire le deuil de sa carrière après les JO de Pékin.

Selon le NY Times, Keller a récemment travaillé en tant qu'agent immobilier à Colorado Springs, ville où se trouve le Comité olympique américain. Le simple fait de s'être trouvé en cet endroit l'expose toutefois à des accusations fédérales pour des faits d'"effraction" et "trouble à l'ordre public".

Au total, cinq personnes, dont un policier, sont mortes lors des tristes événements de mardi dernier.

Soixante-dix personnes ont déjà été inculpées, 170 suspects identifiés et les autorités judiciaires anticipent des "centaines" d'inculpations sur les mois à venir, a déclaré un haut-responsable du ministère de la Justice à Washington.
