The sport's organizers announced Monday that McLaren has signed an agreement granting it the option to enter the sport from the 2022/2023 season, when teams are due to start using a next-generation Gen3 auto.
BMW, whose team are run by USA -based Andretti Motorsport, and Audi have both announced they are leaving the series at the end of this year.
The agreement also follows the precedent of Mercedes, which secured an option to join FE in October 2016 ahead of the 2018-19 campaign - although the HWA Racelab concern that contested FE for one season did act as a precursor to the manufacturer's full-time attack.
"They are going to do some work and evaluation on that in the coming months and then take a decision".
"If we can go from the option stage to full confirmation, I think that would be very exciting".
"We are delighted that McLaren Racing, one of the most prestigious names in motorsport, has acquired the option to join Formula E. McLaren".
McLaren Racing CEO spoke of the reasons for joining this category, highlighting the progress.
In recent years, the Woking-based team has increased its racing involvement beyond F1, including two Indianapolis 500 entries for Fernando Alonso before partnering Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports for a full-time programme that commenced in 2020. Xi Jinping orders China's military to be ready for war "at any second'In his speech, Xi also again emphasised Beijing's new "dual circulation" economic strategy first announced in May amid global challenges brought by the pandemic and China's slowing growth."Only by being self-reliant and developing the domestic market and smoothing out internal circulation can we achieve vibrant growth and development, regardless of the hostility in the outside world", Xi said. That strategy - echoing the theme of "self-reliance" in the latest five-year plan to 2025 - is expected to see Beijing put less reliance on its export-oriented development strategy, or external circulation, but not abandon it altogether.Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute at the University of London, said Xi's remarks showed he meant to make the most of a world that was in flux and undergoing changes that could fundamentally reshape the global order."Xi is now cautiously very optimistic. This has contributed greatly to the success of Formula E as suppliers of our Gen2 battery system".
As part of its ongoing evaluation of potential new motorsport platforms, McLaren will now spend the rest of 2021 considering an entry before deciding whether to proceed and join Formula E for season nine.
Following the announcement of a £185million investment from MSP Sports Capital, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown indicated the manufacturer was evaluating the merits of other championships.
"With some of the most famous names in motorsport already competing in Formula E, we are thrilled that McLaren Racing has chose to examine a potential entry to Formula E", Agag continues.
