How to view rare ‘triple conjunction’ in night sky this weekend

On December 21, 2020, many of us in southern Idaho attempted to look toward the southwest horizon just after sunset for the Saturn / Jupiter conjunction, in which the combined effect is commonly referred to as the "Bethlehem (or "Christmas) Star".

The winter evening sky is a sheer delight with more of the sky's brightest stars in sight than in any other season.

On Jan. 9 shortly after sunset, above the southwestern horizon will be Mercury - the Solar System's innermost planet - will form a "triple conjunction" with Saturn and Jupiter. It's been 800 years since these planets have appeared together like this at night. Mercury will move past Saturn and then Jupiter stating Friday and into Monday evening, NASA reported. "Mercury and Saturn will be a challenge to see within the evening twilight - except for skywatchers at southerly latitudes, where the sky will darken faster".

By Jan. 13, stargazers could be able to see the waxing crescent moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury all in the sky, according to NASA.


This is the first time these planets have appeared this close together since 1623. In fact, they are millions of miles apart.

Though the three planets seem to be bumping elbows, they are still taking social-distancing guidelines to the extreme.

The triple conjunction will appear post-sunset, but fade by nightfall, so those looking to catch a glimpse will have a short window to do so.
