Australia, growing increasingly frustrated, needing five wickets to win, with Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari putting up an epic blockathon, chose to put an end to the friendliness that had been a topic of discussion ahead of the Border-Gavaskar series.
Paine was caught constantly chatting to R Ashwin during India' rearguard forcing the batsman to pull away on multiple occasions.
Ashwin replied: "Just like we wanna get you to India, may be your last series". "That will be your last series".
It seemed innocent enough, but Paine ended with the words: "At least my team-mates like me, d***head". I have seen Steve do it many times in Test matches and Shield games.
"I think if you pretend yesterday was okay, and my behaviour was okay and my wicketkeeping was okay then you've probably got a problem". They haven't given up and they have fought for every inch.
The Tamil Nadu cricketer meanwhile refused to bat until Paine stopped chattering.
"I love the way Wadey goes about it", Paine said.
In the 122nd over, Paine was heard on the stump mic saying: "Can't wait to get you to the Gabba, Ash".
Later, when Lyon enquired why there was a hold-up in play, Ashwin said, "It's your guy, man".
"One thing Justin Langer is really strong on - you don't want abuse, you want banter", Haddin said when asked about the exchange.
"I know he's really disappointed with the way it's come across".
New Zealand had gained the maximum of 120 points from the two-Test series against Pakistan, taking their points tally to 420 out of a possible 600 after having also beaten West Indies and India by the same margin in their two previous series. "Yeah. Can't remember my average, 60-something?", the 36-year-old continued in response to Ashwin's earlier remark. There's no way in the world he was trying to change Rishabh Pant's guard or anything like that.
Pant's innings was more impressive considering he was sidelined all of Sunday and had to be replaced in the field by specialist wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who took four catches in Australia's second innings before the hosts declared at 312-6 with a 406-run lead.
However, after the match, both Ashwin and Paine were spotted laughing the whole matter off as the team shook hands, with one over remaining.
The series is now tied at 1-1 with India the current holders of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
