Alberta ramps up COVID-19 vaccinations, paramedics on priority list for shots

"These figures are not just numbers, but lives", Albertan Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said. The deaths occurred between December 30 and January 12 in numerous regions across the province.

There are now 37 active cases in the town with 293 people having recovered since the pandemic began.

The 38 deaths reported Tuesday surpassed the previous record of 31 recorded on Saturday.

Altogether the data suggests, Hinshaw said, that the "vast majority" of Albertans followed her direction over the holidays and stayed within their household for Christmas.

The province is working toward the goal of contacting all new COVID-19 patients within 24 hours, but it is not known when the province will reach that goal.

Trials suggested each the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine was about 90 per cent effective two weeks after a single dose.


Hinshaw said this is to ensure as many Albertans as possible get the protection of the first dose.

"We know that in those studies there was a range of intervals between the first and second dose that did go up to 42 days", Hinshaw said.

"To prevent as many deaths as possible ... provide that first dose to as many people as possible, while still planning for that second dose".

St. Albert reported 17 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, with 28 more people recovering.

Kenney says nearly 47,000 doses have been administered to front-line health and intensive care workers - including doctors and nurses - and to residents in long-term care homes and supportive living facilities.

"With more contact tracers and fewer cases, we are reducing the number of cases with unknown exposures".
