South Korea passes bill on allowing celebrities to defer military service

BTS brings so much cultural and economic prosperity to the country - especially now that they've broken through with worldwide audiences - it'd be a shame to rip a key member away when he's about to be in the prime of his musical career.

The assembly's plenary session gave the nod to the bill on revising the Military Service Act to grant an exceptional right to defer national defense duties to acclaimed pop artists, such as K-pop megastars BTS, who helped elevate the country's global reputation.

South Korea has long had a law called the Military Service Act - which requires every able-bodied male in the country to serve at least 20 months before they turn 28. and K-Pop boy band members were no exception.

Before the revision, military service exemptions or deferrals were only given to worldwide award-winning athletes and classical musicians.

The law-change was proposed in September, with Democratic Party member Jeon Yong-gi stating that the careers of the K-pop idols, who are the height of success, can not be compromised.


They were previously up for an obscure best recording package Grammy in 2019 for their third studio album Love Yourself: Tear.

Their latest single is also the first mainly Korean song to top the chart.

On the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Life Goes On is closely followed by the Grammy-nominated 'Dynamite', the closing track of 'BE', on No 3 this week.

Trailblazing South Korean boy band BTS have become the first group to have a foreign-language song enter the United States Billboard chart at No. 1, as the Parliament in Seoul cleared the way for them to delay compulsory military service.
