Despite falling behind by double-digits in the first half, No. 7 Kansas was able to battle back to defeat No. 20 Kentucky, 65-62, at the State Farm Champions Classic inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana on Tuesday.
Redshirt freshman Jalen Wilson led the way for the Jayhawks (2-1) with a career-high 23 points in the win.
Agbaji was the only other Kansas player with double-digit points, finishing with 17. Mintz and Brandon Boston Jr. each had a team-high 12 points. Mintz had a chance to tie it with five seconds to go but his 3-pointer was off the mark and Kansas grabbed the rebound. With no fans or even cardboard cutouts, and the only noise being piped-in music during timeouts, the lack of intensity was palpable throughout the game.
8 - Tyon Grant-Foster - Missed the only shot he attempted - a 3-pointer - in his two minutes on the floor, but slipped ahead of the final two on tonight's list by grabbing one offensive rebound. Kentucky shot 36% but couldn't even grab the rebound after Agbaji missed his second free throw during the stretch.
Kansas' Jalen Wilson (10) shoots as Kentucky's Lance Ware (55) defends during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020, in Indianapolis. His dunk on the next possession finally gave Kansas some breathing room. Let me tell you what they did in the second half: "they punked us". But even a win Sunday against Georgia Tech in Atlanta might not be enough to keep them in the Top 25 after this game.
Kansas already has a loss this season, but that came to the top-ranked team in the country, Gonzaga, and the Jayhawks offense is averaging 92 points per game.
Kansas guard Marcus Garrett suited up despite feeling ill the past couple of days.
The quality of play to begin the season will likely be low due to the interruptions for programs because of COVID-19 issues. Garrett could be seen on the bench trying to catch his breath often.
Kentucky heads to a familiar locale, Atlanta, to face Georgia Tech on Sunday.
Kansas plays the first of five straight home games Thursday against Washburn.
