Investigators there have interviewed a number of former Shockers players, as well as the current roster, to try to ascertain whether the accusations against Marshall were true, and what sort of culture he cultivated at Wichita State. Wichita State said assistant coach Isaac Brown would be the team's interim head coach.
A fellow Division I coach also unloaded on Wichita State. I wish to thank the coaches, student-athletes, the university, the community, and all of Shocker Nation for their unending dedication, support and loyalty.
But, he's not leaving empty-handed - the school says it reached a settlement to pay out $7.75 million to the coach over the next 6 years. "WSU will continue its pursuit of excellence with the help of its student-athletes, staff and loyal supporters of the basketball program".
Dana O'Neil, college basketball senior writer: The school has been investigating Marshall since August, hiring Tueth Keeney, an outside firm from Kansas City, to lead the independent probe.
Multiple allegations against Marshall, specifically from the 2015-16 season, including pushing and punching former player Shaquille Morris during practice, placing his hands around the neck of a staff member, and attempting to punch a student who parked in his spot.
Former players also accused Marshall of racially taunting them at practices, with one player of Native American descent saying Marshall made "Indian howling noises" in his direction and told him "to get back on his horse" and another player, from Colombia, accusing Marshall of telling him he would make "a great coffee bean picker".
Marshall's downfall began last spring, when scholarship players and a walk-on left the Wichita State team and a high-profile 2020 commitment asked to be released from his letter of intent. He posted a record of 331-121 with five conference championships, seven NCAA tournament appearance and a Final Four berth in 2013. Wichita State started 35-0 before losing to Kentucky in the second round.
Before arriving at Wichita State, Marshall was the head coach at Winthrop for nine seasons.
Marshall, 57, was previously an assistant coach at Marshall, Charleston, Belmont Abbey and Randolph-Macon, where he played from 1981-85.
