White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx said Americans should limit indoor gatherings to immediate households this Thanksgiving. The regulator said that it intends to make background materials available to the public, including the meeting agenda and committee roster, no later than two business days prior to the meeting.
USA health regulator has said that it will assess on December 10 the emergency use authorisation (EUA) submission by Pfizer and BioNTech for their experimental coronavirus vaccine.
Slaoui had previously said he expected to immunize 20 million people in the month of December and as many as 30 million additional people could receive a vaccine each following month.
Slaoui said Sunday during an appearance on "Meet the Press" that the federal government is likely to create recommendations for who is first to receive the vaccine, but he added the decision will likely be left to state governments.
About 70 per cent of the population needs to be immunised to achieve herd immunity, a goal the country could reach by May, he said.
"What we do need is we need to get as many people as possible vaccinated".
Last week Mr Biden called the vaccination program a "massive undertaking" and "one of the greatest challenges we will face as a nation".
Then, Saloui said, it will be up to the states to determine how the vaccine is distributed at the local level. A recent Gallup poll showed only 58 per cent of Americans would get the vaccine, up from 50 per cent in September.
His comments come amid a surge in coronavirus cases across the country.
The beginning of vaccinations could be a crucial turning point in the battle against the virus that has claimed more than 255,000 lives in the United States, the world's highest reported toll, since emerging from China late past year.
Fauci explained Sunday that "we want to be very transparent" and stressed for people to understand the independent process that led to the point of the FDA, along with independent advisory committees, saying that the vaccines are safe and effective with an emergency use authorization and ultimately a license.
The number of USA coronavirus cases has surpassed 12 million and rose by more than 1 million cases in less than a week for the first time.
Deaths have topped 255,000 with many health experts warning deaths will rise to over 2,000 a day in the coming weeks.
