US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman (L) and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (2nd L) during a visit to the Psagot Winery in the West Bank, on November 19, 2020.
Pompeo has so far backed Trump in refusing to concede defeat to President-elect Joe Biden and it remains unclear how the Biden administration will manage the current United States relationship with Israel or if he will work to reverse some of its policies. There, he announced new U.S. guidelines requiring all U.S. exports from Israeli controlled areas of the West Bank to be labeled as "made in Israel", in a reversal of decades-old policy that differentiated between both sides of the Green Line. "While we await the specifics of the proposal, one thing couldn't be clearer: the BDS movement, which seeks the destruction of Israel, is inherently antisemitic".
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday in Jerusalem that the USA will cut off government support for organizations that participate in the BDS movement.
And in 2019, the European Court of Justice ruled that "foodstuffs originating in the territories occupied by the State of Israel must bear the indication of their territory of origin, accompanied, where those foodstuffs come from an Israeli settlement within that territory, by an indication of that provenance", so the new measure effectively puts the United States at odds with the European Union.
Activists strongly deny the charge, comparing the embargo to the economic isolation that helped bring down apartheid in South Africa.
Pompeo - who has so far backed Trump in refusing to concede defeat to President-elect Joe Biden - is on what could be his final Europe and Middle East tour in the post.
Pompeo also became the first U.S. top diplomat to visit a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian leadership cut ties with Trump White House three years ago, accusing it of pro-Israel bias.
Pompeo's official statement, published on the US Department of State's website, says: "It is the policy of the United States to combat anti-Semitism everywhere in the world and in whatever form it appears, including all forms of discrimination and hatred rooted in anti-Semitism".
Senior Palestinian and Israeli officials today held their first high-profile meeting since the resumption of relations between the two sides after around six months of breakup and it was agreed that Israel would transfer Palestinian tax funds withheld since May.
But Palestinians and much of the world regard those settlements as illegal under global law.
Mr Pompeo's announcement seemed to imply that even Palestinian exports from Area C should be tagged as Israeli products, as should the wine he sampled at Psagot. "I therefore call for both parties to get around the negotiating table to achieve a viable two-state solution".
Trump's outgoing administration has made isolating arch foe Iran a centrepiece of its regional policy.
Pompeo warned the Islamic republic in comments Wednesday that the deals the UAE and Bahrain have reached with Israel showed "its influence in the region is waning".
