The recent surge in COVID-19 cases is causing museums around the country to close again.
"The Institution's top priority is to protect the health and safety of its visitors and staff".
In a statement today, the Smithsonian says it will "use this time to reassess, monitor and explore additional risk-mitigation measures". Almost all Denver museums, including the Clyfford Still Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, are performing mandated closures today, though the Denver Museum of Art will remain open, having received a variance from the state.
On March 14, all Smithsonian facilities in Washington, D.C., as well as in New York City, had to close "as a public health precaution" due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The institute, which runs museums including the National Air and Space Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, said it is not announcing a reopening date for the facilities at this time.
The Smithsonian Institution has 19 museums, nine research centers, and many affiliates around the world.
The National Museum of American History and the National Museum of the American Indian reopened on September 25. In accordance with a gubernatorial order mandating statewide closure of institutions, The Art Institute of Chicago closed earlier this week, with the rest of the city's major institutions including the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium expected to close today.
"The financial state of U.S. museums is moving from bad to worse", Laura Lott, the president and chief executive of the American Alliance of Museums, said in a statement announcing the survey findings. Visitors were asked to reserve free timed-entry passes to visit most locations, as the locations were operating at reduced capacity.
