In places where they're mandated, rates of Covid-19 sink, and one recent model estimates that if all Americans wore them, 63,000 more United States deaths could be prevented by March.
Gates alsocommended his limitations in predicting behaviors and confessed: "I wouldn't have thought wearing a mask would become so controversial", nor would the Donald Trump administration support such a "wild and extreme" opinion when it comes to dealing with the pandemic.
Fauci claimed that "wearing a mask, keeping a distance, avoiding crowds, being outdoors as much as you possibly can - weather permitted - and washing your hands" are the defining ways for one to return to the normal world. He said that in the beginning of the pandemic, not everyone was convinced of the safety of masks, but now that it has been ascertained that COVID-19 is different from fevers and flus, masks are more commonly accepted.
It's overwhelmingly clear that the upside [of mask-wearing] is huge. "But asking about both sounds like you just want things to get better." and they are not, so you just have to come to terms with how it is now.
"The mask helps you open up more things", Gates said. In those cases, the virus would spread when people cough. If someone with a cold and not wearing a mask spent an hour in a room with a group of people, most of the people would remain healthy. However, if the same person had COVID-19, "a high percentage" of people would end up sick.
"These unbelievable viral loads that you see with the coronavirus don't occur with most of the other respiratory viruses", Gates said. "That's like the measles", he said.
Moreover, Gates also revealed that COVID-19 had an unusual ability to spread through asymptomatic patients as well. It claimed that if everybody wore masks, "over 100,000" deaths could be averted int he US.
The two also talk about why experts initially thought masks didn't really help.
But now, Gates said, "it's overwhelmingly clear that the upside [of mask-wearing] is big". Jones positions herself as the pessimist; Gates, the optimist.
Right now, there might be a general consensus between all physicians regarding the importance of masks. "It's awesome, it's nearly like a distortion of time, Rashida", Fauci said.
"Ending this pandemic will require the largest public health effort in history".
