Saudi Arabia, which assumed the G20 presidency this year, is the host of the virtual summit that is bringing together leaders from the world's richest and most developed economies, such as the US, China, India, Turkey, France, the United Kingdom and Brazil, among others.
The G20 Summit this year is being hosted by Saudi Arabia on November 21-22, on the theme "Realizing Opportunities of 21st Century for All", where leaders of the 20 biggest world economies (G20) are discussing how to deal with COVID-19's economic fallout and chart a recovery course.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic forced the summit, which had been scheduled originally to be held in Riyadh, to be conducted virtually. The economic crisis arising as a effect of the virus has dominated the agenda at the two-day summit.
Xi made the remarks via video link at the invitation of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
G20 nations must help plug a $4.5 billion funding gap in the so-called ACT-Accelerator -- a programme that promotes an equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines -- to rein in the pandemic, said a joint letter to the group from Norway's prime minister, South Africa's president, the heads of the European Union and the World Health Organization.
Keen to be better prepared for any potential next pandemic that might come, G20 leaders also said they would commit "to advancing global pandemic preparedness, prevention, detection, and response" and "to the continued sharing of timely, transparent, and standardised data and information".
World leaders, including US President Donald Trump who is refusing to concede a bitter election, popped up in multiple windows across a flickering screen, in a high-stakes webinar held amid the raging pandemic.

"There is a lack of participation from private creditors, and we strongly encourage them to participate on comparable terms when requested by eligible countries", it said.
In September, a Saudi court overturned five death sentences issued after a closed-door trial in Saudi Arabia that ended last year, sentencing them to 20 years in prison instead.
"China is willing to strengthen cooperation with other countries in the research and development, production, and distribution of vaccines", Xi told the G20 Summit.
The pandemic dampened Saudi Arabia's hopes of using the event as a grand coming-out party on the world stage. The G20 should respect the World Health Organization (WHO) and create a global mechanism coping with pandemics. President-elect Joe Biden has not said whether he will join it.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged G20 leaders to offer a "firm commitment" to extend the initiative until the end of 2021.
International Monetary Fund managing director Kristalina Georgieva has warned that the global economy faces a hard road back from the Covid-19 recession, even as vaccines are now in sight.
European members of the G-20 are likely to push for more. Human Rights Watch said the summit was "a mark of global prestige for the government of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman but it helps the Saudi government deflect from its image as a pervasive human rights violator".
