Amazon nabs worldwide rights for 'Coming to America' sequel

Coming 2 America, the starry sequel to 1988's comedy classic Coming to America with Eddie Murphy, has officially moved from Paramount to Amazon and will now premiere on Amazon Prime Video next.

'Coming 2 America' launches on Amazon Prime Video March 5, 2021.

In terms of the plotline this time around, not much is known.


Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, Coming 2 America continues to follow newly-crowned King Akeem and his trusted confidante Semmi embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York - where it all began. "We are so excited for Amazon Studios to bring Eddie Murphy and Coming 2 America to a worldwide audience where they can laugh again with characters they have loved for 30 years, and meet new ones that they will love for years to come".

Both actors are expected to reprise their roles in the sequel movie, alongside James Earl Jones, Jon Amos, Shari Headley, and Louie Anderson. Morgan Freeman ('Seven'), Wesley Snipes ('Blade'), Leslie Jones ('Saturday Night Live'), Tracy Morgan ('30 Rock'), Jermaine Fowler ('Sorry To Bother You'), and KiKi Layne ('The Old Guard') will all be joining the cast lineup. Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein, and David Sheffield wrote the screenplay based on a story by Blaustein, Sheffield, and Justin Kanew that, in turn, is based on characters created by Murphy for the original film.
