Pune-based Serum Institute of India, which has partnered with AstraZeneca for manufacturing the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine is also conducting phase 2 and phase 3 human clinical trials in India.
But since it was tested on a small number of people in Russia, DCGI had initially expressed doubts over the Sputnik V vaccine candidate being tested among a bigger population in India.
It further said two pan-India studies on the Genome of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 virus) in India conducted by ICMR and Department of BioTechnology (DBT) suggest that the virus is genetically stable and there is no major mutation in the virus. "The Sputnik V vaccine, which is based on well-studied human adenoviral vector platform with proven safety, is undergoing clinical trials for the coronavirus pandemic", a statement from the Russian fund had earlier stated. "However, Dr Swaminathan reiterated WHO's position against the unregulated spread of the virus in order to achieve herd immunity".
She said a communication strategy responding to "emerging concerns" around vaccines was key, rather than simply "brushing them off".
While speaking on the accessibility conundrum of COVID vaccine Dr JL Meena, Joint Director, NHA, said, "Of course, to have a check on the upsurge of COVID-19 infection, the vaccine is quintessential".
Modi told the meeting that the entire process of vaccine storage, delivery and administration should have a strong IT backbone and the system should be designed in such a manner so as to have a lasting value to our healthcare system.
The draft of the implementation plan drawn by the national expert group on vaccine administration for Covid-19 has worked on inputs received by central agencies and the states. "Thereafter, we will produce more and more dosages by the permission of the government", added Dr Jadav. The WHO also took the initiative to simplify the operation.
"Considering the overlaps in certain categories, we have estimated that a total of 550-600 million doses of the vaccine will be required initially for the priority population", an official said.
The proposal also aims to track the vaccine's stock, temperature at storage facility, as well as geotag health centres. "The adequate testing, isolation and contract tracking will be done to make sure life is saved".
