Movie theaters can reopen in NY, aside from in NYC, next week

"Now you're seeing the numbers go up all across the country", Cuomo says, noting that "scientists predicted" that the numbers would go up in the fall. Up until now, NY has been taking action statewide or on a regional level.

Cuomo also said the state had served a health order on an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Williamsburg that was planning a wedding that was expected to draw a massive crowd of some 10,000 revelers.

Cuomo claimed the state has succeeded in cooling off the hot spots in neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Queens and upstate that had threatened to spread into wider outbreak. So instead of a state, regional or county level, he says NY will be analyzing on a "block by block level". Areas buffering red zones would be deemed "orange zones" depending on COVID-19 cluster density and areas outside buffer zones would be "yellow zones", also depending on cluster density.

Movie theaters across the state, aside from New York City, can reopen Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday during a briefing.


"You can get married, you just can't have (10,000) people at your wedding", Cuomo said.

-The only answer to a lack of compliance is enforcement, Cuomo says.

Social distancing between parties will be required at all times.

NY has one of the lowest infection rates in the nation, the governor said, at a 1.1% average as of Saturday, same as two weeks ago. He also addressed what he called "COVID fatigue", but urged New Yorkers who might be exhausted of social distancing measures to continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of the virus in NY.
