Ukrainian boxing sensation Vasyl Lomachenko and American standout Teofimo Lopez squared off on October 17 inside the "Bubble" at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, NV.
The win makes Lopez (16-0, 12 KO's) the youngest man to claim all 4 championship titles, a feat he pursued from the onset of actions, stalking Lomachenko with calculated aggressiveness, focusing early attacks on Loma's mid-section, a plan that worked.
Lopez (16-0) added the three titles held by Lomachenko (15-2) to the belt he won past year to become the undisputed 135-champion. Lopez won the final round.
Even though Lopez dominated the fight, the score of 119-109 from judge Julie Lederman (which means that Loma only won 1 round), seems totally excessive.
"I had to dig deep, man". I didn't know if they had him up on the scorecards or not, and I love to fight.
"On the top of that, he (Loma) has been in a 14-month layoff". And each and every day, I take that in.
Lomachenko, who lost only once in almost 400 amateur fights and had only one loss as a pro, thought he did better than the scorecards indicated. "I don't agree with the scorecards".
Lopez was declared the victor to become a new unified lightweight king. But with no fans it was televised on ESPN, providing boxing with a bigger showcase than it would have gotten otherwise.
When Lomachenko tried to shorten Lopez's lead, he was late and ineffective as the younger "Takeover" Lopez stood his ground with speed and good boxing skills. He threw punches only sparingly the first half of the fight, landing just 31 punches in the first seven rounds, before finally picking up the pace in the eighth round.
In the biggest fight of his career, Lopez, of the USA, dominated the first half before Lomachenko came storming back in the later rounds to set the stage for a thrilling final round. I can't commentate too much on it. Lopez landed an average of 15/55 punches per round according to compubox. In the 12th round Lopez outlanded Lomachenko 50 to 19 and opened up a cut that sent blood flowing down his face and prompted referee Russell Mora to stop the fight with 10 seconds left to have the ring doctor look at it before resuming.
"I'm a fighter", Lopez said after the fight regarding the 12th round.
Lopez did his trademark backflip in the ring after the unanimous decision was announced. That is what a true champion does: "to come up and find a way to win".
