Following the best round of the day at the Barracuda Championship, Troy Merritt has jumped into the lead, holding a four-point edge heading into tomorrow's final round of play.
Players receive 8 points for albatross, 5 for eagle, 2 for birdie, zero for par, minus-1 for bogey and minus-3 for double bogey or worse.
Merritt finished his round on the par-71, 7,390-yard Old Greenwood Golf Course with birdies on holes 16 and 17, before just missing a birdie putt on the 18th hole.
"I felt great all week", said Grace.
"Don't get beat again like previous year when we had the lead after 54", Merritt said. Hopefully I can make up over the weekend. The points change so quickly around here ...
Getting three points on the second day, Arjun Atwal took his tally to +9 to sit eight places below his first-round position.Getting three points on the second day, Arjun Atwal took his tally to +9 to sit eight places below his first-round position.
"I played well", said Grillo. "Now, I think I'm going in against the same weight class and if I play my game I think I'm one of the top contenders in that weight class". Pins were tougher on the front nine. Definitely a few adjustments I'll make for tomorrow afternoon, definitely seeing how far the ball is going. "But all in all, I'm really excited and optimistic and, if my putter keeps going the way it's going, I'll have a chance".
Grace, 32, was tied for second entering the third round of this week's PGA Tour event - taking place opposite the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational - when he was forced to withdraw due to the coronavirus. The victor earns a spot in the field at next week's PGA Championship, if not already exempt.
Atwal, who has made the cut in each of the three events he has teed up since PGA Tour's "Return to Golf" in June, will tee up at Wyndham Championship in the last event before the FedExCup play-offs for the truncated season. "After having cold-like symptoms last night in my hotel room, I called the tour and went in for testing first thing this morning". He had two previous top-five finishes in the event.
