The measures, which only apply to schools that choose to mandate masks, would require students in Grades 4 through 12 to wear a mask in high traffic areas, like hallways and on buses.
He said schools will likely reopen when there is slightly higher transmission rate of COVID-19 in the province, compared to a few months ago.
LPSD announced they will be moving to level two of the safe school plans on August 12th.
Despite the current plan in place, Shahab added that pool testing is a very interesting concept.
For example, he said, some rural schools don't have a lot of staff and students, so physical distancing isn't a problem.
Regarding contact tracing, the Ministry of Health said there is already an established process.
That includes five people in intensive care units. If 1,000 pooled tests were processed each week, that could cover as many as 30,000 students. If there was a positive case, individualized tests would be done on everyone in the group.
She said parents still don't know when, and under what conditions, masks will be mandatory.
"Children who are in school are a high property".
Schools will need to identify a space that can be used as an isolation area for students or staff who show symptoms for COVID-19 while at the school and who can't leave the building right away. "Whether one student has the virus or two, each student in that group would be tested individually afterwards to catch the cases before they could spread".
"I think that actually would be a great opportunity to leverage the existing influenza sentinel surveillance system, for a COVID-19 surveillance system, starting in the fall as soon as the school starts and that would give us an indication of potential increased activity", she said. So far, 1,511 cases have been reported in the province over the course of the pandemic.
A total 506 confirmed cases of influenza were detected among preschool children aged five and under between September 1, 2019, and March 21, 2020.
The total comprises 471 cases in the 40-to-59 age range, 467 between the ages of 20 and 39, 253 in the 60-to-79 age range, 239 involving people 19 and under, and 54 in the 80-and-over range.
