Ackerman McQueen and the NRA had an unceremonious separation a year ago, punctuated by the NRA suing Ackerman McQueen over its billing practices, and Ackerman McQueen counter-suing with a defamation case.
"This was a baseless, premeditated attack on our organization and the Second Amendment freedoms it fights to defend", said NRA President Carolyn Meadows.
NY moving to shut down the NRA will energize gun owners across America and backfire politically for Democrats, former White House press secretary and Fox News contributor Ari Fleischer says. It aims to dissolve the NRA and requires four current and former executives - including CEO Wayne LaPierre - to pay restitution.
The lawsuit from New York's attorney general also claims Powell, LaPierre's chief of staff, misappropriated NRA funds during the more than three years he worked for the gun group. As evidenced by the lawsuit filed by the NRA today against the NY AG, we not only will not shrink from this fight - we will confront it and prevail.
"For almost three decades, Wayne LaPierre has served as the chief executive officer of the NRA and has exploited the organization for his financial benefit, and the benefit of a close circle of NRA staff, board members, and vendors", the 163-page complaint states.
Frazer, meanwhile, is accused of failing to ensure compliance with board procedures, NRA policy and the law. But the incoming treasurer told the NY attorney general that he was not aware of this contract.
She is also asking that all four executives be blocked from ever serving on the board of a NY charity. He and his wife also traveled to Africa for all-expense paid safaris, gifted by an NRA vendor. Among other incidents outlined in the suit, it says Wayne LaPierre arranged for a $17 million retirement for himself, without board approval, and funneled millions to himself through an outside firm so he wouldn't have to report it on his taxes.
James' lawsuit alleges that Phillips, whose job it was to manage the financial operations of the charitable organization, lied on financial disclosure forms and set up numerous deals to enrich himself and his girlfriend.
James, meanwhile, said that she wants to see the gun lobbying group, which is chartered in NY state, to shut down.
I filed a lawsuit to dissolve the National Rifle Association for years of self-dealing and illegal conduct. No organization is above the law. For years, the NRA diverted millions and millions of dollars away from its charitable mission for personal use by senior leadership to award contracts to the financial gain of close associates and family and appeared to dole out lucrative no show contracts to former employees in order to buy their silence and continued loyalty.
James's lawsuit also details a pass-through arrangement between the NRA and Ackerman McQueen, through which the public relations firm covered expenses for LaPierre and other NRA leaders and then billed the gun group for them using descriptions on invoices such as "out-of-pocket expenses".
Attorney General Letitia James accused the nonprofit's senior leadership of diverting millions of dollars for their use, squandering the funds on family vacations, private jets and expensive dinners.
"The failure of the NRA to comply with multiple fiduciary responsibilities and state and federal laws resulted in the NRA seeing substantial losses on its balance sheet: going from a surplus of $27,802,714 in 2015 to a net deficit of $36,276,779in 2018 - contributing to a total loss of more than $64 million in just three years", the statement said. In New York, we have a set of laws that every individual and entity must be held accountable to, regardless of its size, influence, power, or wealth.
This suit couldn't happen to a nicer organization, and could indeed be the death knell for one of the most corrupt and evil organizations in the world-at least, we hope.
