Jason Derulo said that he thought "Cats" movie would "change the world" after he saw the first trailer.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph newspaper, Derulo said: "For the longest time, I was trying to figure out what's the flawless first role?". Cats checked all the boxes. "You can't get a more start-studded cast, you don't get a more respected director than an Oscar victor, and Rum Tum Tugger is a legacy role, a standout character in a classic musical".
The R&B star played Rum Tum Tugger in Tom Hooper's critically savaged adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage musical, which baffled cinemagoers a year ago. "I thought it was gonna change the world". Even when I saw the trailer, I got chills down my spine!'
"For the longest time, I was trying to figure out what's the ideal first role?" he told The Telegraph.
He starred alongside the likes of Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson, Ian McKellen and more.
The film received scathing reviews with critics finding new and creative ways to describe the film's mishaps.
Unfortunately, those changes did little to save the film's already battered reputation.
"The problem with the film was that Tom Hooper decided, as he had with 'Les Mis, ' that he didn't want anybody involved in it who was involved in the original show", Lloyd Webber said.
Derulo admitted the movie "didn't pan out", but said he has learned important lessons for the future of his career. "You can't wait for the flawless moment, cause that might not be your moment", he said.
If you haven't seen 2019's Cats yet, gather a few friends together on a video call and watch it together - it is regarded as one of the worst films of the century for good reason, but it's also baffling to such a degree that you need other people you can turn to and say "Did you just see that??"
