Shortly after Ghislaine Maxwell was accused in 2015 of being Jeffrey Epstein's madam, Epstein told Maxwell she needed to stop acting like an "esacping [sic] convict" and continue going to parties, according to court documents that were unsealed on Thursday evening.
In an email on January 24, 2015, Maxwell appears to try to distance herself from any romantic relationship she had with Epstein, who befriended countless celebrities over the years, including Donald Trump and Bill Clinton.
"Go outside, head high, not as an escaping convict".
"I would appreciate it if shelley would come out and say she was your g'friend - I think she was from end 99 to 2002", Maxwell wrote to Epstein. She faces six counts, including perjury, and faces up to 35 years in prison if convicted.
Epstein killed himself last summer while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. He had also pleaded not guilty.
The in the court filings, Maxwell and her attorney portray Giuffre as unreliable, pointing to errors in certain information she provided.
A NY federal judge is now deciding which further documents to release in the case, amid bitter opposition from Maxwell and her legal team.
"Ghislaine Maxwell brought me into the sex trafficking industry". Ms Maxwell was recently arrested on federal charges that she recruited at least three girls, including one as young as 14, for Epstein to sexually abuse in the 1990s. The government also charges Maxwell lied during her April 2016 testimony when she denied knowing Epstein engaged in sex with underage girls or that she was present during such encounters.
Former president Bill Clinton traveled with Jeffrey Epstein to his private island and stayed there with "two young girls" from NY, according to a recently-unsealed interview of prominent Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre.
Other documents released Thursday include flight logs from Epstein's private jets, police reports from Palm Beach, Florida, where Epstein had a home, among other documents.
Maxwell is jailed awaiting trial in NY.
Maxwell's lawyers, Mark Cohen and Laura Menninger, didn't immediately respond to email messages sent after business hours seeking comment about Maxwell's email correspondence with Epstein or about the allegations in the unsealed documents.
In her deposition, Giuffre describes Epstein and Maxwell as "joined hip by hip". A day later, Epstein was found dead in his Manhattan federal jail cell of an apparent suicide while awaiting trial.
The documents also contain a transcript deposition given by Epstein's main accuser, Giuffre, who has also made allegations against Prince Andrew. After that, Giuffre testified, Maxwell and Epstein began farming her out to powerful men. He was arrested on new sex-trafficking charges in July 2019 in a case filed by federal prosecutors in NY.
The documents are from a now-settled defamation lawsuit in 2015 filed by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who claims she had sex with Prince Andrew when she was just 17 years old.
The civil case is Giuffre v. Maxwell, 15-CV-07433, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (Manhattan); The criminal case is U.S. v. Maxwell, 20-CR-330, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (Manhattan).
