President Trump wants to send Americans another round of coronavirus relief checks, saying in a Wednesday interview that he supports "larger numbers than the Democrats" but stressed "it has to be done properly".
Trump added that any legislation needs to include incentives for Americans to go back to work - setting him up for a clash with Democrats in Congress over unemployment benefits.
There are two big differences between CARES and HEROES: The latter makes anyone with a taxpayer identification number eligible for a payment, instead of just those with a social security number, and it would grant $1,200 for up to three dependents of any age.
"We had something where they wanted where it gave you a disincentive to work last time", Trump said. "I support actually larger numbers than the Democrats".
Trump, speaking to Fox Business's Blake Berman, confirmed that he supported another round of checks, framing it as part of "a very great incentive to work".
The president also said he wants an easier distribution process free of some of the glitches that plagued the first round.
'I want the money getting to people to be larger so they can spend it, ' he continued. "I want the money to get there quickly and in a non-complicated fashion", he stated.
In May, Democrats pushed a $3 trillion coronavirus relief bill through the House, including nearly $1 trillion for state and local governments and another round of $1,200 direct payments to individuals, along with help for the unemployed, renters and homeowners, college debt holders and the Postal Service. However, at this point, those who could get a second one can now hope for a late summer or early fall arrival, at best, based on the fact that Senate leaders have not said whether or not they'll discuss the bill sooner rather than later.
'They wanted to make it too complicated.
On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said that a potential stimulus bill will be approved later in July.
On the question of a fourth round of assistance, Trump said in May: "Phase Four is going to happen". And it was still money going to people and helping people so I was all for that.
