A Hampton Inn employee in North Carolina has been fired from her job after she called police on a black woman and her two children who had been staying at the hotel and were enjoying some time out at the pool.
Missy Williams-Wright, her son, 11, and daughter, 7, were staying at the Hampton Inn in Williamston, North Carolina, when a hotel employee called the police to report a trespassing, Williamston Police said in a statement on Monday. "She said to me, 'Oh because it's always people like you using the pool unauthorized.' Who's people like me?" "The team member is no longer employed at the hotel".
Williams-Wright claimed in the video that other hotel guests using the pool were not questioned. "But it was two Caucasian people sitting right over there and she said nothing to them".
"I feel it's discrimination", Williams-Wright says in the almost 10-minute video as two officers approach her. I have a key to get in and I can show you that it works ... "I didn't break the law", she continued. "I have a room here and I told her that".
The police officers then further degraded Williams-Wright when they showed up by running her license plate, even after she had showed them her room key.
The employee said she "just wanted to make sure everyone who's in the pool is supposed to be in the pool".
In the video, police and the hotel employee are heard asking for Wright's name.
She refused to show any identification, so police ran her license plate from her vehicle, which was parked outside the pool area.
Now the employee has been fired and the hotel chain is apologizing.
'I'm here on business with my kids in the pool, ' the mother shares to both the officers and to the people watching her video online.
The incident occurred this past Saturday in Williamston, NC.
The woman, who is identified on her Instagram page as Anita Williams-Wright, became irate and balked at the inference that she was not a hotel guest. "We remain in contact with the hotel's ownership about follow-up actions, and to ensure that in the future, their employees reflect the best values of our brand and are welcoming of all".
