Courteney Cox will be starring in the upcoming Scream movie! Following previous reports of her ex-husband David Arquette reprising the role of Dewey, it has now been announced that Cox is on board for the sequel as well, returning to once again play the fan favorite role of Gale Weathers-Riley.
The reporter and author who helped solve each other murders, the Gale Weathers character is an integral part of what makes Scream work. No word yet on franchise leading lady Neve Campbell, but last we heard, she was also in preliminary talks back in May, so it's probably a safe bet that'll she come onboard sooner than later.
Radio Silence said in a statement, "We can't imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney". Jamie and Guy's incredible script does that legacy justice and we're so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.
The fifth instalment will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
While screenwriter Kevin Williamson has always been the brains behind this franchise, he's stepping into an executive producer role for this entry while James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Castle Rock) write the screenplay this time.
As for what kind of territory a Scream 5 could even cover, your guess is as good as ours. Get more details about Paramount's relaunch of the horror franchise below. One wonders if there's really anything left to serve as proper inspiration for a Scream 5 in a way that would be true to the spirit of the series, but here's hoping that Vanderbilt and Busick find a way.
