The Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, and Atlanta Hawks are the only three National Basketball Association teams that have yet to release a public statement amid growing protests across North America in the fight against racial injustice.
Embattled Madison Square Garden Company executive chairman and New York Knicks owner James Dolan had to clarify his sentiments to employees on Tuesday following a leaked email sent to workers yesterday tried to explain why neither the business nor team released a statement in support of current ongoing calls for anti-racism solidarity.
"Let me be clear: We vehemently condemn and reject racism against anyone, period".
The New York Knick are one of two National Basketball Association teams that hadn't made a public statement about George Floyd and the protests against racism and injustices that have been happening across our country for the past five teams.
In his email Monday, Dolan said some employees "asked whether our company was going to make a public statement about the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer".
The Knicks also weighed in Tuesday on Instagram, posting a black square followed by #BlackoutTuesday and #NBATogether. Therefore, I want you to understand our internal position. The coronavirus and civil unrest have taken their toll on our way of life. At Madison Square Garden, we have worked hard to build an environment of inclusion and mutual respect and those are the values that we try to live every day. "What's important is how we operate", he wrote. Our companies are committed to upholding our values, which include creating a respectful workplace for all, and that will never change.
"It's something that I won't ever forget", the 20-year-old black defenseman, the team's 22nd-overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft who signed a three-year, $3.825 million contract with the Rangers on March 16, wrote as part of a statement posted on Twitter. How we treat each other matters. I know that this is a difficult time, and that we will always need to communicate with one another on the hard issues.
Such a stance where even a condemnation of racism was too controversial for Dolan's liking was met with predictable anger and disappointment by fans.
