Co-founder of Reddit platform Alexis Ohanian announced on Instagram and Twitter that he was resigning from the company's board of directors to make a room for "a black candidate" to take over his job.
"I'm writing this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: "What did you do?" he wrote.
The couple welcomed their daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.in September 2017 and followed it up with a celebrity filled wedding in New Orleans in November 2017.
Ohanian co-founded Reddit, the popular discussion website, in 2005.
Ohanian announced his decision in a video posted across social media where he outlined his reasoning.
He vowed to use any future gains on his stock in the enterprise to serve the black community, predominantly by curbing racial hate. To everyone fighting to fix our broken nation: "do not stop", he concluded.
Reddit's former CEO Ellen Pao blasted the company saying it "monetizes white supremacy" while two of its biggest subreddits staged a blackout and called for leadership to stand down if they don't tackle "bigotry" on the platform.
He specifically called out Reddit's failure to take action on The_Donald, a pro-Trump subreddit that became a breeding ground for violent content. She tweeted that Reddit should have shutdown the forum rather than amplifying "hate, racism, and violence". "This gap between our content policy and our values has eroded our effectiveness in combating hate and racism on Reddit; I accept full responsibility for this", Huffman wrote.
"So much of what is happening now lies at your feet", Ms Pao wrote.
