"We deeply appreciate the support and advice of state and local government officials, as well as our internal management and team of medical experts, all of whom have been working hard to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved, and we will continue to closely follow their guidance throughout every step of the planning process with our partners at ViacomCBS".
The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards will still go ahead despite the coronavirus outbreak, making it the first major awards show to occur in a physical venue since the pandemic.
"The 2020 MTV VMAs will be the first Barclays Center event since the COVID-19 pandemic reached NY", adds Oliver Weisberg, CEO of Barclays Center and the Brooklyn Nets.
MTV said some VMA performances would take place at unspecified NY landmarks and that social distancing and limits on capacity would be enforced at the 19,000-seat indoor venue.
Award shows traditionally feature large numbers of performers, guests, audiences, and stage crews, and have been relegated to online or prerecorded events since the pandemic shut down theater, music and other live shows in mid-March.
It was not clear how many performances would be live.
This year's ceremony will be held at New York City's Barclays Center on Saturday, Aug. 30, TVLine has learned, and promises "epic performances from various iconic locations" in all five boroughs - Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island, Queens and Manhattan. Additional details will be released at a later date, with options being based on "the science and data in NY".
Organizers of the Emmy Awards for television said earlier this month that the ceremony in September would go ahead as planned in Los Angeles but gave no details of how the show would be produced.
