"Therefore, it is recommended that Police deployment may be enhanced at and inside PSX", said the report, adding, "It is pertinent to mention that backside of Pakistan Stock Exchange, area opposite the railway tracks is hub of illegal activities which might be used by terrorists to attack PSX".
"The terrorists resorted to straight firing which injured some civilians". Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon told Reuters that they exchanged gunfire with security personnel.
"The assailants had a plan to hold people hostage inside as there are over a thousand employees at the PSX".
Gen Omar Ahmed Bokhari - who oversees the paramilitary Rangers force which took part in the operation - accused neighboring India of aiding the attackers by allegedly activating "sleeper cells" that Pakistan claims Indian intelligence has planted throughout the country.
Rizwan Ahmend, a police official at the scene of the attack says gunmen opened fire at the entrance and have entered the stock exchange grounds. BLA is one of the oldest - and arguably largest - of at least six insurgent groups fighting for Balochistan independence.
The assailants stormed the exchange after launching a grenade attack at the main gate to the building.
Later, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a designated terror group, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Pakistan has always been plagued by militant violence but attacks have become less frequent in recent years after military operations against various factions in strongholds along the Afghan border.
The attackers arrived in a auto and hurled hand grenades at the first gate of the PSX where police challenged them and foiled their attempt to barge into the building, said DIG (South) Sharjeel Kharal, adding that due to the combined efforts of security guards and law enforcement agencies all the attackers were killed. The hotel is the centrepiece of a multi-billion-dollar Chinese project and was selected in order to target Chinese and other investors.
Several projects linked to China's Belt and Road initiative are in Balochistan and are opposed by the BLA. In charge of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Raja Umar Khatab said that the terrorists had planned for a long fight but they were failed to fulfill their evil design.
